Whatcom Museum

The big yellow sculpture is by the Mexican artist Sebastian. We are lucky to have his work on display around downtown Bellingham. The pieces will be here until September.

I went to a great workshop today at the Trish Harding School of Art at Studio UFO. Our model, Ali, posed in the same position for 20 minutes at a time, with short breaks in between. We all painted her, each from a different perspective. All the paintings were unique and wonderful. Here are a few of the artists at work and our model as I saw her from where my easel was placed.

Looking Out My Studio Window

Out the window, across the parking lot, is Chestnut Street and Georgia Pacific. These two ceramic buildings are a favorite of mine and a great painting subject.

Morning View

Standing at the kitchen sink, getting ready to feed the cats, I look out and see this. Sorry Cats, you'll have to wait a bit. Must grab my camera and take some photos first.

Cleaning Up the Mess

Took these photos on Wednesday. It didn't take long at all for Trillium Corporation to begin cleaning up the remains of the buildings they own that burned in Bellingham last week.

Perfect Beginning to a Beautiful Day

Visit to Felix Solomon

Eight of us visited Felix Solomon's studio this morning. Trish Harding arranged the trip. What a wonderful man and I loved his work. He carves in the style of the early Salish people. He is working on two large projects at the moment and we got an opportunity to see what he was up to. The good news is that he is being recognized nationally for his work. He is one of only a handful of native artists recognized by the Smithsonian Institution. I fell in love with one of his carved spoons. It's the front one in the picture and the one in my hand in the last picture. Yes, I bought it and I'm very happy it's now part of our family collection of art. (Susan Scott took the last picture of me talking to Felix.)

After the Fire

There was a huge fire in Old Town Bellingham early this morning. I learned of it via Facebook where my friend John Stark posted some amazing pictures he took of the fire in full burn. We were in the area this afternoon and the building was still smoldering. The amazing thing is that the firemen were able to keep the fire away from the adjacent buildings. The blue building behind the one that burned houses a bunch of art studios. My friend and former teacher Lorna Leibert has her studio there. Too close for comfort.
